4 Mobile Meditation Tools

If your calendar is booked solid and you feel like you spend most of your life either in the car or at the office, you might want to consider scheduling some relaxation into your day. I know, I know -- who has time for that?!? Well, if that was your response, you should immediately download one (or more) of the mediation apps below. Seriously.

Note: All of the apps below have been released under an open source General Public License (GPL), and they are free to download, free to modify, and free to reuse.

It's also worth pointing out that the Apps are available on both Google Play and F-Droid, a repository of FOSS apps for the Android operating system. F-Droid exists outside of Google Play, though, so there are a few really simple steps you need to go through to get everything in place. First, you need to set your device to "Allow Installation of Applications From Unknown Sources," which is normally as simple as going into Android's "Settings" menu, tapping on the "Applications" option, and then turning on the choice with language about "unknown sources." The exact details vary from Android version to Android version and from device to device. Once you've done that, just go to https://f-droid.org/FDroid.apk to install the Android app and you can browse the F-Droid catalog from there.

Binaural Beats Therapy

Binaural Beats Therapy is a slightly different take on meditation, but it's an interesting option since all you have to do is listen to the sounds created in the App. It claims that it "stimulates your brain by sending special auditory artifacts directly into your headphones to produce subtle changes in behavior through entrainment of brainwaves frequency.

Brain activity operates in waves whose frequency can be encouraged to change by the sound waves produced in the app." And to top it off, it can help you relax and be more creative ... this could be perfect for someone who's not into the more traditional meditation techniques.

Bodhi Timer

Bodhi Timer is a nicely designed meditation timer, so if you find yourself meditating by yourself for a few minutes in your office, this App can be a good tool to have. You can set the timer to however long you want, and you can also select music, sounds, style of timer, circle animations, and notification types. It describes itself as "minimalist," which can be perfect for when you're tying to clear your mind.

Floating Image

If you have trouble keeping your mind off of your calendar, though, you might benefit from some good old imagery ... and that's where Floating Image comes into play. Whether you want to look at calming photos of the ocean, images of space, or you want to stare at puppies, this App can flip through them for you, helping you take your mind off of worries and (hopefully) let you start relaxing.

Just Sit

Inspired by the saying, "If you walk, just walk, if you sit, just sit, but whatever you do, don't wobble" by Zen Master Unmon, this simple App is another good meditation timer. According to its F-Droid page, it lets you run timers for both pre-meditation and meditation periods, it lets you turn off your phone ringer, and it keeps the timer on-screen while it's counting down. All of these help give it a hands-off approach, which is exactly what you want when you're trying to meditate.
