How to Drill Holes to Hang Window Curtains

    • 1). Mark the wall or window frame where you intend to install one end of the curtain rod. Measure and note the position of the mark in relation to the upper corner of the window opening. Two measurements are needed: one to indicate the mark's vertical position and the other to indicate its horizontal position.

    • 2). Examine the mounting brackets to determine if there are dedicated left and right brackets. Most brackets may be used on either end of the rod. Choose one corner of the base plate of the bracket, then position it on the wall at the level of the reference mark. Pass the tip of a pencil through each screw hole in the base plate to mark their positions on the wall. Repeat to mark the screw hole positions on the opposite side of the window.

    • 3). Drill a horizontal hole through each screw-hole mark into the wall. You will immediately know by the amount of resistance on the drill bit if you are drilling into a framing stud. At least two screws in each bracket should be installed into solid wood or into wall anchors. If you are drilling into a hollow portion of the wall, enlarge the screw holes with a slightly larger bit, depending on the diameter of the wall anchors. Install wall anchors, if necessary.
