Plastics in the Environment: How Do They Affect Children?

What Can Physicians Do?

Physicians who care for children should become familiar with the sources of and possible long-term effects of phthalates and BPA. The amount of data remains voluminous in this area, as does the controversy. Some physician and advocacy groups advise the precautionary approach for now, whereas others claim that the plastic products are completely safe. At the federal government level, phthalates have been removed from some infant products. Some manufacturers already have produced products labeled as BPA-free. Some retailers pledge to sell only baby bottles that are BPA free. Despite these steps, agents of concern continue to be used in products for children and for women of child-bearing potential.
