What Is Dialysis Treatment?

When the kidneys fail to work, dialysis treatment is usually given to serve as the kidney by working its functions. The dialysis treatment is a procedure that would remove toxins and other dirt from the body which the kidneys normally do when they are still functioning. Those people whose kidneys are functioning up to 10 to 15% or those who are in their end stage renal failure needs to have dialysis.

Dialysis treatment is needed for those who have renal failure. Once the kidneys fail, people will no longer have the ability to excrete waste from their body and this would lead to imbalances in minerals like sodium and potassium. Dialysis also maintain blood pressure of the patients because when minerals are no longer balance they can lead to high blood pressure which can be very crucial.

But there are also other people who do not need to have a long term dialysis treatment. People also need dialysis treatment if they have chronic renal failure. Kidneys are already damaged and they need kidney transplant will just stop the dialysis treatment.

Dialysis treatment comprises of two types. These are the hemodialysis and the peritoneal dialysis. They work in different ways but they have the same principle of cleansing the body which the kidneys should do.

Hemodialysis use hemodialyzer which act as artificial kidneys and it removes impurities which stay in the blood. The patient should go with a surgery so that a shunt will be placed in the arms of neck so that the artificial kidney will allow the blood flow.
Usually, this treatment should be done three times a week with 4 hours per treatment. The hours and number of treatment be based on the kidney's ability to function. Plus, it also depends on how the impurities are collected.

The other type is peritoneal dialysis. In this type, the blood is cleaned while inside the body and the blood is not removed. A doctor will need to do a minor operation, putting a catheter inside the abdomen to have a port of entry. In the catheter as solutions referred to as dialysate is being put and this would fill the abdominal cavity. Through osmosis the toxins are remove.

Although, dialysis treatment can substitute the work of the kidneys, this does not still provide cure to renal failure. The health condition is just being controlled. People with dialysis treatment can still live a normal life except that they have to go to the hospital for their treatment. It doesn't mean that people with dialysis treatment will live shorter than those with normal kidneys.
