Let"s Talk About Death
The Telegraph ran an article recently based on research carried out by a regional law firm.
This research revealed that around two million people in Britain are worried that they will have to sell their home in order to pay care home fees later in life.
Even more worrying, around one third of those interviewed said that they were relying on the proceeds from an inheritance to see them through their retirement age, despite never having discussed this possibility with their parents or guardians.
It seems that many retired people are still failing to make a Will when they first enter into retirement, and before any form of dementia sets in.
By doing so, they could in fact make use of exemptions and reliefs which would reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable during the probate process - an amount which could of course be used by the beneficiaries to help with their own retirement and potential care home fees.
One of the best ways to ensure that your family will be able to remain in their home without having to sell it to fund nursing fees is to set up a trust.
This would mean that you can continue living in your home for the duration of your lifetime, but it will also be protected should your beneficiaries turn it into their family home after your demise.
You may feel that your Estate is straightforward, but sadly you would be surprised about what circumstances and information can come to light after a death, which often go on to cause pain and upset among next of kin, when a Will has not been prepared.
