Do-It-Yourself Repair of a Closet
- Doors often become misaligned. To fix this problem, open the closet doors. Adjust the bracket at the top of the door by loosening the screw slightly with a regular screwdriver. Now, push the bracket and door slightly to realign the door. If the top gap is wider, push the door toward the door jamb side. If it is thinner at the top, push the bracket away from the jamb side. Or, move the bottom corner of the door toward the jamb side of the closet by lifting it up and sliding the bottom pivot across the bracket support at the bottom of the door.
- To fix a broken closet rod, lift the rod out of the support bracket. Measure the distance between the two support brackets with a tape measure. Cut a new rod to this measurement and set it into the bracket. If the brackets are broken or loose. Remove the closet rod, and unscrew the bracket. Patch the screw holes with drywall patch compound. Measure and install the brackets in a new spot a few inches away from the old bracket by screwing them into the walls with a power screwdriver.
- If the handles or knobs of your closet are broken or loose, take the loose handle or knob off. Unscrew the knob by turning it counterclockwise, this unscrews the entire knob. Or, unscrew the screw holding on the handle with a screwdriver. Coat the bottom of the knob, or the ends of the handle where it contacts the door with epoxy and wood glue. Then replace it and tighten the knob, or the handle screws. If the part is broken, simply remove it and replace it with a new one. Replacement knobs and handles are available at a home improvement store. Just give the door some time to dry before using it again.
- Shelves are another problem with closets. If shelving boards break, simply remove any screws holding the shelves to the closet shelf brackets and pull them out. Then replace them. Normally, the brackets will pull out or break. In this case, remove the brackets from the wall by unscrewing the screw holding it to the wall. Spackle over the old hole with drywall joint compound or Spackle and let it dry for 12 hours or so. Install the new brackets by setting them an inch away from the old holes. Screw them into the wall with a power driver. Install each bracket at the same height for a level shelf. Use a tape measure and level to ensure the shelf is straight.
