- 1). Open the front door of your GE refrigerator and locate the temperature control knob. Turn the knob to the "defrost" position if it has one. Otherwise turn the knob to the "off" position.
- 2). Remove all the food from the refrigerator and from the freezer compartment. Empty all the ice cube trays and set them aside. Place the food from inside the fridge in the coldest spot in your home.
- 3). Set a pan in the freezer compartment to catch the ice as it melts. Check the pan often and empty it as needed.
- 4). Fill a large pan with hot water and place it in the interior of the GE refrigerator. The hot water will make the defrosting process go more quickly.
- 5). Clean your GE refrigerator thoroughly after the defrosting is complete. It can take two to five hours for the defrost cycle to complete. The greater the buildup of ice, the longer it will take to defrost the refrigerator. Restock the refrigerator with the food you removed earlier.
