Homemade Water Filter - Making a Water Filter From Scratch
If you are worried about the water you are drinking but think it is too expensive to do anything about it think again. The truth is making your own water filtration system at home is fairly simple and inexpensive. Even if you are not the most handy person in the world building a system is a breeze. You could go out and purchase a kit to assemble or simply build it from scratch. Either way the basic parts and components are the same. Since making one from scratch is a little bit more complicated I am going to walk you through the basic steps of what you need to do. This is not meant to be a step by step guide on how to assemble a homemade water filter, but rather simply enough to give you an idea as to whether or not you can build it on your own.
The first thing you need to figure out is whether you are going to build a single, double, or triple filtration system. Depending on your filtration needs and desires you can decide which type will deliver the best results. Once you decide on the number of filters you will need to assemble the housings. There are books and websites that can help you with this. Make sure that they are secure and water tight.
Once the housings have been built you need to decide what type of filter to put into it. There are three main types of filters to choose from: granulated activated charcoal, silver sterasyl ceramic, and carbon block. Granulated activated charcoal are the most common and least expensive of the three types. These filter use tightly packed charcoal to catch particles and filter them out from the water. They do a very good job of filtering out lead and other heavy containments. Silver sterasyl ceramic filters are used to destroy bacteria and other harmful organic compounds. These filters are very difficult to build at home and can be a complicated and intricate process. Lastly are carbon block filters. A carbon block is pretty much exactly what you would think it would be, a block of carbon that water is forced through. The carbon filters out all the unwanted and harmful particles in the water. They are more effective than a granulated activated charcoal filter, but also remove fluoride that is added in most city water.
Once you have chosen your filter type, place it in the housing. The homemade water filter then needs to be placed under the sink on the pipe where the water comes. You will have to shut off the water, remove the pipe, add the filter section in and then replace the pipe. When you turn the water on make sure that none of the water is leaking out. If this is secure simply let the water run for ten minutes and you are done. See that was not so hard was it?
