Conference Coverage and News From ESICM, Chest, and More
The CME portion of the conference coverage from the 15th Annual Congress of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) is posted and includes discussions on new modes of mechanical ventilation in acute respiratory failure, a look at clinical outcomes in intensive care, informed consent in ICU research, an article on how the concept of futility is viewed in various countries, and much more. To read the coverage, click here.
As part of our dedication to bringing you the latest news and information from leading conferences in critical care, the editors of Medscape Critical Care are now at Chest 2002, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians in San Diego, California, reporting on the latest clinical news and information. We have already posted several news articles and will follow up with CME conference coverage shortly. Some of the news items include use of inhaled nitric oxide for right ventricular failure after cardiac surgery, a biosensor that can identify ventilator-acquired pneumonia, survival benefit of drotrecogin alfa (activated), and much more. To read the latest news from Chest 2002, click here.
We are getting a great response to the Medscape Critical Care and Secondary Anemia Ask the Experts programs. One question that was just answered by our panel of experts discussed folate and endothelial function. To read the answer, click here. Another had to do with the benefits of prone positioning in mechanical ventilation. To read the answer, click here. You will continue to see new questions and answers posted as they come from our expert panel. If you are a physician and wish to ask a question on the topic of critical care or secondary anemia, go to the Medscape Critical Care home page, scroll down to the "Discussions" section, and select the "Submit a Question" link.
We also have a number of recently posted articles that you will find interesting. One article from Emerging Infectious Diseases discusses the index case of inhalational anthrax from October 2001 in a man who lived and worked in Florida. To read that article, click here. Another article, also from Emerging Infectious Diseases, contained more information on the same index case. To read that article, click here.
I am still looking for interesting critical care-related case studies to post on the site. The cases will be presented in an interactive format that links into the discussion section of the site as well, allowing users to comment on the cases. Cases can be submitted to me through the email address listed below.
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about what you see on the site or wish to suggest a new program that you would find useful, please feel free to email me at Criticalcareeditor@webmd.net.
