Air Filters

• 1). Put on a dust mask. Even after normal use, the air filters and interior parts of the Trane XE80 can accumulate a great deal of dust.
  
  
• 2). Remove and discard the old cardboard and fiberglass filters from the XE80 and install replacement filters. The air filters slide out from the side of the XE80 between the furnace and the beginning of the heating ducts.
  
  
• 3). Remove and vacuum the air filters with a vacuum cleaner if plastic air filters are in place.
  
  

Interior

• 1). Disconnect all power to the Trane XE80 at the main circuit breaker.
  
  
• 2). Shut off the gas supply valve to the Trane XE80.
  
  
• 3). Remove the front cover of the Trane XE80.
  
  
• 4). Clean around the interior of the Trane XE80 with a vacuum cleaner using the hose attachment. Be careful of any electrical wires as they can be knocked loose during cleaning.
  
  
• 5). Wipe up any surface dirt with clean rags. A small amount of water may be applied to the rags to help remove the dust, but do not use any sort of cleaning chemical on any part of the Trane XE80. Many cleaning chemicals are flammable and can catch fire during the furnace's operation or damage the interior parts.
  
  
• 6). Clean around the burner area with a vacuum cleaner using the hose attachment. Wipe up any excess dust with clean rags. The burner area consists of several slitted pipes which the ignited gas passes through to supply heat to the ducts. This area can become dusty and cause inefficient burning. The flame of the gas burners should be even and blue. If the flame is yellow and uneven, this indicates dirt in the burner. A technician may be required to thoroughly test and clean the burner area if this cleaning method is not sufficient to make the furnace run properly.
  
  
• 7). Clean around the heating components with a vacuum cleaner using the hose attachment. Wipe away any excess dust with clean rags. Pay close attention to the heat exchanger. This is a large, rectangular metal part towards the rear of the Trane XE80. It regulates heat exchange and its efficiency can be impaired if it becomes too dusty. Use caution when cleaning the heat exchanger as it has many wires which can be knocked loose during cleaning.
  
  
• 8). Restore power to the Trane XE80 at the main circuit breaker.
  
  
• 9). Turn on the gas valve supplying gas to the Trane XE80.

  Re-light the pilot light with a long-arm butane lighter.

  Reinstall the cover of the Trane XE80 back in place.
