What Pediatric Hospitals Can Teach Adult Hospitals

What Pediatric Hospitals Can Teach Adult Hospitals

Abstract and Introduction

Abstract

Collaboration efforts between adult and pediatric facilities usually begin at the administrative level or with technological innovations, but here, we look through the patient's eyes, teaching adult facilities to heal with play and music, distracting with iPads and colorful design, and calming with family-centered care and art therapy.

Introduction

Children's hospitals understand, believe, and feel that we are creating a life changing experience for our patients and building a deeply emotional connection with their families. Our challenge – healing the smallest and the sickest – is indeed challenging. At St. Louis Children's Hospital, we recognize that addressing a patient's medical needs is only the first step in fulfilling our mission: "doing what's kid for kids." We must also create an environment that reduces anxiety, creates a sense of play, and provides education for patients and their families.
