20 Liberal Causes to Support this Holiday Season

Tuesday, December 2 is Giving Tuesday, a celebration of generosity we can use as an antidote to the orgy of commercialism that is Black Friday. While there has been enormous debate over whether liberals or conservatives are more generous with their charitable donations, the simple fact is that Americans of all ages, incomes, genders, racial and ethnic identities, and political affiliations engage in charitable activity all year long.

But to whom should we give? When it comes to financial donations, most of us don't have a ton of extra cash on hand to dispense at random. We know we need to maximize our charitable donations by selecting the groups or organizations that we think can do the most good. This will vary depending on which causes we support, but one thing's for sure: there are plenty of deserving organizations dedicated to protecting and preserving liberal values in the United States and around the world:


1. Action Against Hunger


sends 93% of all the donations it receives directly to alleviating hunger around the world. Last year, the group saved the lives of more than 150,000 children. Help them save even more!

provides micro-loans and business training to poor people around the world, this group helped alleviate poverty for over 33 million people in 2013.  More »

3. American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE)

4. Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU)


is dedicated to maintaining the separation of church and state in the United States, in order to ensure religious liberty for all.  More »

5. Campaign for America's Future


calls itself "the strategy center for the progressive movement" and is dedicated to increasing economic justice by limiting corporate power.

6. Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR)


is an educational organization with roots in the 1960s civil rights movement. It uses the law "as a positive force for social change" to rid our society of social, legal, and economic inequality.

7. Coalition on Human Needs (CHN)


is the collaborative efforts of many American civil rights, religious, and labor organizations working on public policy to help low income citizens including children, women, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

8. Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF)


is one of the leading organizations dedicated to protecting the civil rights of disabled citizens, including the right to adequate health care.  More »

9. Doctors Without Borders


is the heroic group of medical care providers and volunteers from all over the world that tackles some of the most extreme health emergencies in history, including the Ebola outbreak in Africa. More »

10. Global Fund for Women (GFW)


provides grants to groups all over the world that are working to protect the human rights of women and girls, including protection from violence and sex trafficking, and access to medical care.
