How to Get Rid of a Cold After Traveling
- 1). Take an over-the-counter, non-steroidal pain medication for pain and, if applicable, fever. Follow the label directions precisely regarding the amount to take and the frequency.
- 2). Place a vaporizer in the room you will be spending the most time in at home. The extra moisture in the air may provide some relief for nasal passages. Several brands of vaporizers exist and some can be used with aromatic oils for opening the nasal passages. If you can't purchase one, you can place a few drops of eucalyptus oil or menthol in a bowl of water and keep it near you.
- 3). Take a decongestant to relieve some of the stuffiness associated with a cold, and cough medicine if you have a cough.
- 4). Rest as much as you can and drink a lot of water to help keep you hydrated. Eat whatever you feel like eating, but also incorporate soothing foods such as chicken broth.
- 5). Suck on throat lozenges to keep the throat lubricated. The phlegm draining down the back of the throat may irritate the throat lining, adding to your discomfort.
