Ohio Deer Hunting Season

In order to legally hunt deer in Ohio, you must first have the appropriate permits and license to do so. Deer permits are $24 and are valid statewide. You may also purchase an antlerless deer permit for $15, however, these permits only allow you to hunt deer without antlers. The $24 deer permit allows you to hunt both. Antlerless deer are defined as deer with either no antlers or antlers that are less than three inches in length. Under Ohio law, anyone under the age of 16 may not hunt unless they do so with supervision from a parent, legal guardian or another adult. During the youth deer gun season, minors 17 years and younger may hunt with an adult, as long as the adult is not hunting. The Ohio Division of Wildlife offers controlled deer hunts during various times of the year for minors. Minor hunters in Ohio must have the appropriate license and permit in order to hunt. Deer hunters in Ohio must hunt within one of three designated zones, and may only take home a certain amount of deer from each zone. Zone A is made up of 20 northwestern counties; Zone B is made up of 30 counties; and Zone C covers 38 central, southern, southeastern and southwestern counties. The maximum number of deer that a hunter may take from Zone A is two, while the maximum number from Zone B is four. Deer hunters in Ohio are not allowed to carry more than one firearm at a time while hunting. Crossbows are allowed, however, explosive or poisoned arrows are not. During the gun season and the youth deer gun season, shotguns, rifles, and handguns are allowed if they meet certain requirements. For example, shotguns are not allowed to carry more than three shells. Dogs may not be used to hunt deer, but leashed dogs can be used to track deer. In order to legally hunt deer in Ohio, you must wear an orange coat, vest, jacket or coveralls. The clothing must either be solid orange or camouflage orange and must be worn a half-hour before sunrise until sunset during the youth deer gun season and gun season. This law applies to hunters on both private hunting grounds and public hunting grounds. Each deer killed must be properly tagged at the exact location it was killed. The name and address of the hunter must be written on the tag, along with the date and time of the killing.
