Making Swag Type Window Drapes

    • 1). Measure the window you are planning to decorate on either side and across the top, then add about 5 feet of extra fabric to your total to make up for the fabric that will be wrapped around the curtain rod.

    • 2). Head to your local craft store and find fabric you like for your drapery and purchase the amount according to what you measured from your windows. For example if your windows are 10 feet high and five feet wide (10 feet + 10 feet + 5 feet = 25 feet), you'll want to purchase 30 feet of fabric to hang, and have them cut it about 5 feet wide.

    • 3). Hang a curtain rod above the window, according to the directions that accompany your curtain rod.

    • 4). Lay your fabric over your curtain rod so that it hangs down evenly on both sides and clip fabric to the curtain rod at either end to hold it in place. Remember that you'll have excess fabric hanging on both sides to accommodate for wrapping later on.

    • 5). Take fabric on one end of your rod and unclip it, then wrap it once around the corner end of the rod. Repeat this step with the fabric on the other corner of your curtain rod.

    • 6). Decide how you want your fabric to drape and set it up accordingly. For example, if you want one large draping piece in the center, pull fabric gently into the center of your rod until it hangs to your liking. If you want two U shaped draping pieces at the top of your curtain then clip the fabric in the center of the rod with a decorative drape clip, or tie it with a decorative rope, and pull down fabric on either side so that you have two Us hanging over your window. For three drapes, say if you have a wide window, add two clips evenly spaced across the rod and pull down three pieces fabric, so your drapes hang much like a velvet rope. In this case you'll want to buy a longer piece of fabric initially.
