- 1). Choose a location for one of the stakes in your backyard or in another wide-open area. Use a rubber mallet to drive a 36-inch iron rod into the ground. Bury the stake so that only 14 inches of the rod is showing.
- 2). Find the location of the opposing stake with the measuring tape--it should be 40 feet from the first stake. Install the second stake with the procedure used in Step 1.
- 3). Pour sand around the stakes to create more of a "horseshoe pit" feel and consider marking the pit area off with spray paint or another marking material. The dimensions of the pit should be 32 inches by 45 inches. Build a small wall or stack sand bags to create a backstop for your pit if you'd like.
