How to Paint a Blown Ceiling
- 1). Lay tarps over the entire floor and any other objects in the room to protect them from paint splatters.
- 2). Place a ladder near one wall and apply painter's tape along the entire top edge of the wall. Extend the tape around the entire perimeter of the ceiling.
- 3). Put on safety glasses and a dust mask. Attach an brush to the end of a vacuum wand and turn the vacuum on. Run the brush over all surfaces of the ceiling to remove the loose texture which can interfere with the paint.
- 4). Open a can of primer and pour it into a paint tray. If you have water stains on the ceiling, use a stain-sealing primer. Screw an extension handle onto a paint roller that has a 1-inch nap cover. Insert the roller into the primer and apply it to the ceiling using long, even stokes.
- 5). Allow the primer to dry overnight or until it is no longer sticky to the touch. Then apply a second coat of primer, and allow it to dry for another night.
- 6). Pour the desired ceiling paint color into a clean paint tray and insert a clean 1-inch nap roller onto the paint roller. Apply the paint to the ceiling in the same manner as the primer, using long, even strokes. If you notice the roller skipping spots, slow down the rolling and press the roller against the ceiling harder.
