How to Change the Alternator on a 2005 Ford Ranger
- 1). Open the Ranger's hood. Disconnect the Ranger's negative battery cable from the battery with your battery wrench.
- 2). Torque the Ranger's serpentine belt tensioner sideways with the serpentine belt tool to create slack in the serpentine belt. With your free hand, slip the belt off the Ranger's alternator pulley. Let the tensioner pulley fall back into place.
- 3). Take the engine harness connector out of the back of the alternator by hand. Disconnect the ground wire from the alternator, using the socket set.
- 4). Remove the alternator mounting bolts from the Ranger's alternator, using your socket set. Lift the old alternator out of the engine well by hand.
- 5). Insert the new alternator in the Ranger's alternator bracket. Bolt it in with your socket set.
- 6). Plug the wiring connector into the alternator by hand. Connect the ground wire to the new alternator with the socket set.
- 7). Reinstall the Ranger's serpentine belt in reverse of how you removed it. Put the negative battery cable back on the battery. Close the hood.
