Bali Troppo Zone Hotels

The Aussies have a saying: "Gone Troppo!" When you go troppo, you drop everything and go to a tropical paradise to party. The tiny Indonesian island of Bali is Australia's favorite tropical paradise. Travelers from all over the world looking for a laid-back vacation in the sun flock to Bali's Troppo Zone and find exactly what they're looking for!

Where is the Bali Troppo Zone?

Bali's tourist boom began in the 1980's in the formerly sleepy fishing villages of Kuta and Legian and continued unabated until well into the 90's. All traffic into this region from the airport must go down Jalan Legian ("jalan" means street or road in Indonesian) before it can turn right at Jalan Pantai Kuta (Kuta Beach Road) and proceed for about a quarter mile (400 meters) to the beach, where the road takes a sharp right turn and becomes a one way beach front road. It continues for roughly a mile and a half (2 kilometers) until it reaches the border between Kuta and Legian at Jalan Melasi. Another right turn here takes you back to Jalan Legian. Everything within the rectangle formed by these roads is the Troppo Zone. Accommodations in the Troppo Zone range from budget to moderately expensive.

    Poppies

    • The original Poppies is one of the oldest and most loved establishments in the Troppo Zone, if not all of Bali. Established in 1973, it is the only hotel in Bali to have not one but two streets named after it. The original Poppies is located on "Poppies Lane 1" and the Poppies Annex is on "Poppies Lane 2." The rooms at Poppies are expensive by Bali standards (over $75 per night), but they do offer special low season rates and packages.

    The Troppo Zone Hotel

The aptly named Troppo Zone Hotel is actually situated just outside of the Troppo Zone on the opposite side of Legian Road (Jalan Legian). Under-35 patrons love the Troppo Zone hotel. It is one of the cheapest hotels with a swimming pool in town and enjoys a reputation for living up to its name. On the downside, the rooms and linen are a little worn. On an island full of friendly people, the staff here are among the friendliest. Room rates vary according to season and availability and are negotiable. Expect to pay around $10-$20 per night for two.

    The Bounty Hotel

The Bounty Hotel is a more upmarket version of the Troppo Zone. Like its neighbor, it has a reputation as a party hotel. It just costs more. They have very nice facilities, a great swimming pool and a good restaurant. The Bounty advertises itself as "for the young at heart" and that's true up to a point, but generally speaking, older travelers prefer the quieter hotels in this price bracket ($75.00+ per night).

Fat Yogi's is another Troppo Zone institution and offers great value for budget travelers. Rooms for 2 start at $7.00 per night (fan only) and go up to $16.00 for an air-conditioned double. These prices haven't changed since at least 2004, so aren't likely to go up dramatically any time soon.
