How to Wire a 2001 Caravan for Trailer Lights
- 1). Park the Dodge Caravan, switch the ignition off as well as the headlights. Open the lift gate.
- 2). Locate the two black push-pin fasteners that secure the driver's side brake light assembly. Pry the fasteners out with a flat head screwdriver, freeing the brake light assembly. Pull the brake light assembly directly off to remove it.
- 3). Push the red tab on the electrical connector on the inside of the brake light assembly downward to unlock the electrical connector. Depress the tab on the base of the electrical connector and pull the connector away from the brake light assembly. Set the brake light assembly aside.
- 4). Peel away the rubber grommet on the Caravan located behind the brake light assembly. Cut a small opening in the center of the rubber grommet with a utility knife so you can feed the wiring from the wiring harness through it.
- 5). Route the wires from the trailer wiring adapter through the hole in the grommet and insert the converter box into the opening. The adapter has three connectors, two Caravan light connectors on one end and a four-pole trailer connector on the other end, with a white ground wire and a converter box in the center.
- 6). Replace the grommet so that all wires protrude through the grommet and the converter box is inside the recess behind the grommet. Connect one of the Caravan's wiring harnesses to the Caravan's brake light electrical connector.
- 7). Drill a hole next to the rubber grommet. Insert a short screw through the metal ring on the white ground wire and screw it into the newly drilled hole in the Caravan. Tighten the screw.
- 8). Remove the rear bumper screw below the rubber grommet along the top edge of the rear bumper. Pry the bumper away from the Caravan slightly and feed the trailer wiring connector through the rear bumper until it protrudes below the bumper.
- 9). Connect the free Caravan wiring harness to the connector on the brake light assembly. Slide the red tab to lock the connector into place then replace the brake light assembly. Push the black push-pins in to secure the light assembly. Replace the bumper screw.

Route the trailer wire below the vehicle along the inside edge of the rear bumper and along the trailer hitch on the Caravan. Secure it to the bumper and trailer hitch with duct tape or zip ties.
