How to Relocate My Car
- 1). Decide on a mode of transport. Vehicles can be transported by a number of means. A car may be shipped by land through use of a flatbed auto transporter. A car can also be shipped by use of a large cargo carrying sea vessel. Many times these methods are combined to meet the needs of the customer. If a vehicle must be relocated across international borders, then a large commercial shipper may be used. Domestically, you can rent a flatbed truck or hire a private vehicle transportation company to relocate the vehicle via road travel. In the case of international shipping, the shipper may be responsible for customs documentation and vehicle import or export duties.
- 2). Set a time period. The time period that elapses between loading of a vehicle on a vessel and the arrival of the vehicle at a destination must be determined for cost, insurance, scheduling and customs purposes. To better ensure efficient transport, scheduling must also account for weather emergencies, mechanical malfunction and volume of traffic.
- 3). Prepare the vehicle. The vehicle must be properly prepared for transportation can take place. The vehicle should be emptied prior to loading as both shipping costs and safety concerns are dependent on the total weight hauled by the transporter. The vehicle should also be cleared of personal items and high-dollar-value items to prevent damage or theft during transportation. In some cases, the vehicle must be free of leaks as environmental protection concerns are enforced upon entry into a country or territory.
- 4). Load and deliver the vehicle. If the vehicle will be transported by land, then deliver the vehicle to the proper loading point designated by the transporter. If the vehicle will be transported by rented flat bed, then load the vehicle using the proper technique outlined by the vehicle manufacturer. Properly secure the vehicle to prevent accidents or vehicle damage. Ensure that the proper signage is visible if the vehicle is considered an oversize load. If shipping by sea, then deliver the vehicle to the port area where the designated sea vessel is embarked. Prior to shipping, you may be required to fill out customs documents and pay the appropriate fee.
