How to Make Sea Glass Using a Rock Tumbler

    • 1). Put on safety glasses and heavy gloves before handling broken glass. Select the glass samples you want to process, and place them in the barrel of the tumbler. Don't overfill the tumbler: about half to two-thirds full of glass pieces is the ideal amount.

    • 2). Add water until it almost covers the glass pieces, and then add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of sand. Cap the tumbler and turn it on.

    • 3). Allow the tumbler to run for three or four days before turning it off. Lift a few pieces of glass from the barrel with a long-handled spoon and inspect them. All but the most jagged edges are rounded off after a few hours, but frosting glass requires more time.

Remove the glass pieces from the tumbler and wash them. Wash the mud and grit from the tumbler barrel in the gutter or elsewhere outside. Don't wash it down your drain.
