Is Global Warming Caused by The Greenhouse Effect?
- NOAA's Climate Prediction Center describes global warming as "Certain natural and human-produced gases prevent(ing) the sun's energy from escaping back to space leading to an overall rise in the temperature of the Earth's atmosphere."
- According to the International Panel on Climate Change 2007 report, "Warming of the climate system is unequivocal." This same report states that "most" of this global warming is "very likely" due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.
- A paper passed off as a peer-reviewed article by Arthur Robinson, a biochemist with no climatology experience, stated that global warming is a myth, and increased carbon dioxide emissions are good for the planet due to increasing plant growth.
- A common argument against the greenhouse gas effect as the cause for global warming is that solar fluctuations account for global warming. As Brian Fagan states in his book, "The Long Summer," solar radiation flux "appears to account for less than half of twentieth century warming."
- Combine the change in solar fluctuation with the December 2007 research by Ross R. McKitrick that questions the statistical accounting of the urban heat island effect, and this could account for all of the 20th century global warming.
- Though there is disagreement over whether global warming exists, almost everyone agrees that reducing greenhouse gas emissions and urban sprawl is good for the environment.
