Homemade Log Carrier

    Styles

    • A firewood carrier can be hard-sided, like a bucket or basket. You could fashion a wooden box to carry firewood, making it the same length as the logs you use for your woodstove or fireplace. But hard-sided carriers are heavy, so most log carriers are soft sided.

Soft sided carriers can be made from any sturdy material, including leather, canvas of burlap. You could use denim from old jeans, burlap sacks, sailcloth, or a leather blacksmith's apron as the basis for your carrier.

    Construction

    • To make a soft-sided firewood carrier you should choose a piece of sturdy material 1 yard long and 24 inches wide. For a sturdier carrier, use a double layer of fabric.

You'll also need handles. The simplest handles are one-inch dowels, each 24 inches long. Thread the dowels through channels sewn in either end of the carrier. Cut out a section in the center of each side so you can grasp the dowels. You could also use smooth sticks or metal rods.

    Decoration

    • Add a row of brass rivets or brass upholstery tacks underneath the handles on both sides of your firewood carrier, as both a decorative accent and to reinforce the channels that hold the handles.

Stencil a decorative design or your initials on one side of the carrier. Choose a simple stencil and latex fabric paint. This is an especially nice touch if you decide to give a log carrier as a gift.
