Dremel 400 Instructions
- 1). Unplug the Dremel 400 from its power source before beginning to prevent injury while connecting attachments.
- 2). Orient the Dremel 400 so it is upright. The correct position is where the power switch and speed adjustment wheel are pointing upwards toward you.
- 3). Identify the "collet nut" on the Dremel 400. The collet nut is at the far tip of the tool and has a round cylindrical appearance with two flat sides on it. Locate the shaft lock button that is just behind the collet nut on the plastic body of the tool,.
- 4). Press and hold down the shaft lock button with the thumb of either hand. Take the small collet wrench that came with the Dremel 400 kit and slide it over the two flat sides of the collet nut. While continuing to hold down the shaft lock button, loosen the collet nut by rotating it to the right while looking down on the power switch side (top) of the tool with the collet pointing away from you.
- 5). Select the attachment you wish to use with the Dremel 400 and attempt to slide its shaft into the end of the collet. If necessary, continue loosening the collet nut in increments until the shaft of the attachment slides easily into the collet. Once inserted, use the collet wrench to tighten the collet nut as tight as possible, but do so without the use of any other tools.
- 6). Put on a pair of leather gloves and protective eye goggles for personal safety, and then plug the Dremel 400 into an available wall outlet. Turn on the power switch and adjust the speed dial as needed to perform the work necessary. For drilling wood, a speed setting of 3 or 4 will work for light woods, while a speed of 5 or 6 is best for hardwoods such as oak. For drilling metals, a speed setting of 5 or 6 is needed.
- 7). Turn off the tool and unplug it before switching to a different attachment. Loosen the collet nut just enough that the currently-installed attachment may be easily removed. Insert the shaft of the new attachment into the collet and tighten firmly. Use the same procedures any time attachments must be exchanged.
