What Kind Of Shows Work For Hindi Television

TV in the mid 90's was not as monotonous as it was in the later phase. Television has always played around the popularity factor. With the rise in number of Hindi TV shows, the variety in content is the major factor. While everybody wanted to deliver what was popular and high on sales factor, channels needed its USPs and experimental factors.

It was one of those good golden days of Sony Entertainment Television when the channel was brimming with memorable shows like DekhBhaiDekh, Just Mohobbat, Family No. 1 and a contrast value show, Heena.

Heena was then the no.1 show as per the less popular TRP system. One of the top serial in the endless list of Indian telly soaps. And it was a wonder! It had all the possible masala elements that would oppose the value based shows in the past. Further on, the show went to portray betrayal, the power of money and the twist in relationships when all was lost and changed. Ask your mothers and sisters, they must have all watched the show at some point and cried for the pretty Simone Singh as they lived her tales of distress through their weekends.

The show successfully ran for about two or three years. And then for long, we didn't see similar plot for over a decade. This happened till Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms bought the rights of a Dubai based show Khwaish which was to be telecasted on SET India. However the show could not repeat the success of its predecessor. At this point of time the TV shows moved from rich Gujarati and Punjabi backgrounds to the rural inset. More reality shows, deeper concepts and less of K shows!

Then came an Indian television serial by the name Pavitra Rishta which was launched by Zee TV. Whether it would work was the big question on everyone's mind. The channel played a safe bet by roping in a good looking, now a celeb star, Sushant Singh Rajput to attract audiences. The traditional approach to the script, worked wonders for the show. The peculiarity of content got its own set of audience until the story settled to realize its loyal audience. Well, time alone could dictate its fate. And it did, the show worked wonders for the channel becoming one of themost popular TV shows, Hindi.

And to make sure the audience missed nothing, most channels established online platforms to showcase more content online. And did they manage it well? Definitely they did!
