How to Write a Contract With Yourself
- 1). Identify the goal you would like to accomplish. A goal is the result or achievement toward which you aim your efforts. Goals can be large or small, complex or simple. You can set a goal to complete college, lose weight or to get to class on time every day for a week.
- 2). Write out a step-by-step plan of action to complete your goal. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, the first step could be to buy running shoes; the second step could be to map out a route to run and the third step could be to run.
- 3). Identify and write out a list of all the obstacles that have stopped you from achieving this goal in the past. Examples of obstacles include procrastination, bad time management and your work schedule. Write countermeasures to these obstacles so that when they come up again, you have a way to remove the obstacles to your goals.
- 4). Identify and write out the benefits of achieving your goal. For example, if your goal is to a marathon, a side benefit may be better fitness or weight loss.
- 5). Write the statement of your goals.
Example:
I, ____________________________, hereby agree and commit to take the following steps to achieve my goal to [insert goal]. - 6). Write the steps you will take to achieve your goal in the next paragraph.
- 7). Write out the countermeasures to your obstacles in the finale paragraph.
- 8). Include a line at the bottom of the contract for your signature.
- 9). Sign your contract. Read it as often as necessary to keep yourself on course to achieving your goals.
