Radon Safety Plan

    What is Radon?

    • Radon is radiation in gas form that moves through the cracks in the Earth and into the cracks in the foundation of the house. Once the radon gas is able to leak into the house or crawlspace it becomes trapped and the level of radon will continue to rise over time.

    Testing for Radon

    • It is important to test for radon to keep everyone who is living in the house safe. When radon gas decays it turns into radioactive particles that can become trapped in the lungs. Testing for radon is the only way to detect the presence of it because it is an odorless, colorless gas. Home testing kits are available for homeowners to purchase or there are several professional agencies that have specialized equipment to test for the radon gas.

    Cost

    • According to the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB), the cost to fix a radon gas problem in the house can range from $800 to $2,500 depending on the design of the house and the method chosen by the homeowner to reduce the radon gas. The average radon reduction system is about $1,200.

    Dangers of Radon Exposure

    • Radon is a dangerous gas whose threat needs to be taken seriously. When radon gas breaks down it turns into radioactive particles which, if inhaled, will become trapped in the lungs. Once in the lungs, the particles continue to break down which can damage the lungs and cause the development of lung cancer.

    Continued Safety

    • Just because a house tested negative for the presence of radon gas does not mean that it will always be that way. Every house is susceptible to radon gas as it can leak into the house through any unsealed crack. It is important to have the house retested every few years to ensure to keep the threat of radon under control.
