International Poetry Festival in Nicaragua

International Poetry Festival

By Rolando Ernesto Tellez

GRANADA, Nicaragua - The art of poetry enhances life in the beautiful colonial city of Granada, facing Lake Nicaragua. Poets and poetesses from different regions of the world come to participate in this yearly international poetry festival in mid February.

Oftentimes, a poet would say that a word is the food that nourishes the soul, whereas a scientist would say that words create wrinkles in the brain. Sharing and listening to poems of the youth and the more experienced writers gives us new perspectives, enriching us, both emotionally and intellectually.

This annual week-event is an opportunity to meet poets, rediscover ourselves, and wonder about the plethora of poetry. Our famous poet, Ruben Dario, and others who followed him, would have been so proud to reap the fruits of the seeds they once planted.

International poets continue discovering Nicaraguan talent. Poetry is like music; some tonalities are not always understood because of the diverse shades of the possible meaning of words and expressions. Yet, communication takes place at a higher level.

It is wonderful to share with international poets. Our nervous systems interact with European, Australian, New Zealand, Latin American, Asian, North American, Indian poets´ nervous systems to communicate the meanings of words, that is, the most humane and sublime aspect in our species.

The great poet, Octavio Paz, stated that poetry is a translation, that is, a literary act where we use all our literary knowledge creatively. This hodgepodge is what we read in good poetry books.
