How to Lower My Probation Payments
- 1). Document finances and any hardship. Gather proof of income, such as pay-stubs or an unemployment award letter. Locate proof of debts, such as medical expenses and living costs, including utility and shelter payments. Make copies.
- 2). Document any medical condition that is preventing or restricting employment. Make an appointment with a physician. Ask for a letter stating the condition, the expected length and any work limitations.
- 3). Contact the probation officer, and arrange a meeting. Bring the document copies -- and medical letter, if applicable -- to the appointment.
- 4). Ask the probation officer for a referral to the collection department. Some probation departments require a referral from the officer handling the case for a new payment plan. Show the officer the documentation.
- 5). Explain the hardship to the collection division. Give the clerk the documents showing finances and debts. Ask for the lowered payment agreement in writing.
