How do I Remove the Intake Manifold on a 1995 S10?

    • 1). Bring vehicle to a complete stop. Disengage the engine and open the hood. Allow engine to cool. Remove the negative battery cable by loosening the cable clamp with a wrench. Move the cable to the side.

    • 2). Remove the fuel tank filler cap. This will relieve the pressure from the tank. At the engine, attach a fuel pressure gauge to the pressure fitting on the fuel injector rail.

    • 3). Attach a tube to the gauge relief valve and put the other end into a fuel canister. Slowly open the release valve on the pressure gauge and let the fuel run into the canister. Close the valve and remove the gauge.

    • 4). Place a fluid catch pan underneath the drain port on the bottom of the radiator. Open the drain port by turning it with a pair of pliers. Once all the fluid is done pouring out, close off the drain port with the pliers.

    • 5). Loosen the clamps on the air cleaner hoses with a screwdriver and disconnect them from the throttle body.

    • 6). Loosen and remove the bolts holding the throttle cable bracket onto the manifold. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the bolts. Set the cable aside.

    • 7). Disconnect the hoses and wires from the GER valve and MAP sensor. You can do this by hand.

    • 8). Tag and label all hoses and wires connected to the top half of intake manifold assembly. Use masking tape and a sharpie to label them. Remove the tagged items.

    • 9). Loosen and remove the bolts that secure the upper manifold to the lower manifold. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the bolts. Once the bolts are removed, lift the upper intake manifold from the engine compartment and set it on a workbench.

Operate a floor jack to raise the front end of the truck. Lower the vehicle onto a set of jack stands to support it. The right (passenger) side front wheel needs to come off. Use a lug nut wrench to loosen and remove the lug nuts and pull off the wheel.

Look on the intake manifold to see the heater hose bracket. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the bolt that retains the bracket.

Remove the brackets that retain the fuel lines to the intake manifold. Remove the bolts with a ratchet and socket. Depending on your truck model variation, there could be a bracket underneath the manifold. Access it at the wheel well on the passenger side to remove it with a wrench.

Loosen the bolts on the heater hose clamp at the manifold with a wrench. Pull off the heater hose. Label the spark plug wires with tape and a sharpie. Unplug the wires from the spark plugs. Draw them through the manifold until they are hanging below the manifold.

Loosen and remove the nuts holding the manifold to the engine block. Use a ratchet and socket to loosen them and pull the lower manifold from the engine. Be sure to remove the gasket and throw it away. Plug all open engine ports with a rag. Allow the rags to plug the ports until you are ready to install a new gasket.
