How to Fix a Plug on an Extension Cord
- 1). Unplug the extension cord if it's connected to an outlet. Cut off the old plug head if it's a factory-molded plug head.
- 2). Strip off one inch of the plastic outer casing with the wire strippers to reveal the wires inside.
- 3). Remove the plastic coating from the individual wires so there is 1/2 inch of wire exposed.
- 1). Unplug the extension cord. If it's not a factory-molded plug head, loosen the screws on the bottom side of the plug and unscrew all the screws on top of the plug.
- 2). Slide down the plug cover cap until you see the three screws attaching the cord wires to the plug head prong. Unscrew those screws and free the connected wires.
- 3). Pull off the plug head and remove the back side of the plug from the cord. It slides right off.
- 4). Strip off wire if necessary. You need at least 1/2 inch of exposed wire in good shape for each prong. If the wire looks frayed, snip off the damaged ends and strip off the cover.
- 1). Disassemble the new replacement plug casing by unscrewing the three screws on top of the plug head. Slide the back side of the plug onto the electrical cord so the end with the wire has the open side facing the exposed wire ends.
- 2). Spread out the three wires, and twist each wire separately. You want the end of each wire twisted together tightly.
- 3). Wrap the white coated wire around the silver metal terminal screw. Wrap the wire around the screw in the same direction you tighten the screw.
- 4). Tighten the screw, or if the replacement plug has a screw with a square U-shaped plate, slide the wire straight in one side of the metal plate. Tighten down the screw.
- 5). Wrap the black coated wire around the gold metal terminal screw. Wrap the wire around the screw in the same direction you tighten the screw.
- 6). Tighten the screw, or if the replacement plug has a screw with a square U-shaped plate, slide the wire straight in one side of the metal plate. Tighten down the screw.
- 7). Wrap the green coated wire around the green metal terminal screw. Wrap the wire around the screw in the same direction you tighten the screw.
- 8). Tighten the screw, or if the replacement plug has a screw with a square U-shaped plate, slide the wire straight in one side of the metal plate. Tighten down the screw.
- 9). Slide the top cover onto the plug head, and fit the parts together by lining up the notch. It only fits one way, so there is no way to mess it up.

Screw the three screws down, securing the casing to the plug head. On the side of the cap casing are two screws. Tighten these screws so the cord is secured to the plug head. Do not overtighten these screws, or you will crush the cord.
