How to Hook Up a Gas Countertop Stove
- 1). Designate a space on the countertop for the stove, allowing for about 24 inches of depth into the countertop; width varies greatly from standard four-burner units to commercial grade cooktops with built-in grills. A vent range hood is required above the cooktop, so cabinets directly above the cooktop need to be removed. Once you have decided on the location, install electrical outlets under the counter.
- 2). Measure the cooktop with a tape measure and mark the countertop to be cut with a pencil. Refer to the cooktop manufacturer's instructions for model specific measurements before cutting the countertop.
- 3). Cut the countertop to fit the cooktop; cutting methods will vary depending on the countertop material. Some materials, such as marble and granite, may require a professional countertop contractor to cut the countertop.
- 4). Brace the cabinet and countertop corners where the cooktop will set, if required. Refer to the manufacturer's installation instructions for bracing requirements.
- 5). Fasten the cooktop frame to the countertop with screws and a power drill. Do not over-tighten the screws because the screw heads may snap off.
- 6). Place the cooktop into the cooktop frame.
- 7). Connect the gas piping to the cooktop, using a flexible gas appliance connector. Apply Teflon gas tape to the threads of the connector to ensure a leak-proof seal and tighten with a adjustable wrench.
- 8). Connect the opposite end of the flexible gas connector to the gas pressure regulator installed in the cooktop.
- 9). Connect the cooktop electrical connector to the electrical outlet in the cabinet under the cooktop. Apply Teflon tape to the threads of the gas pressure regulator and tighten with an adjustable wrench.

Install each of the cooktop burners to the cooktop, align them with the holes in the cooktop and install the burner grates. - 11
Check the cooktop with a torpedo level and adjust the cooktop leveling screws with a screwdriver until the cooktop is level. - 12
Turn on the gas supply to the cooktop and spray the gas connections using a mixture of soap and water to check for leaks.The soap and water mixture bubbles up at the location of the leak. - 13
Test each cooktop burner separately; turn each burner from the lowest setting to the highest to ensure that each burner comes on and responds to the dial. If the cooktop does not operate properly, turn off the gas supply to the cooktop, disconnect the electrical supply and call a professional contractor for assistance.
