How to Clean Smoke Stains From Painted Wooden Shutters

Wet the surface of the shutters with the hose. Use the hose to wash off any surface dirt, grime, spider webs and other debris so you can concentrate on removing the smoke stains. - 2). Combine 1 cup of ammonia-based, nondetergent cleaner with 1 gallon of hot water in a bucket.
- 3). Put on rubber gloves before you begin cleaning to protect your skin from the drying effects of ammonia.
- 4). Soak a sponge in the ammonia solution. Begin washing the shutters at the top to avoid leaving drip marks on the painted wood. Use a ladder to reach the tops of the shutters, if necessary. Rinse the sponge frequently as the smoke stains are lifted and continue to scrub the shutters to remove the film. Change the ammonia solution to a fresh solution when it looks dirty.
- 5). Rinse the shutters with the hose. Spray the top of the shutters and work your way down to rinse loosened smoke stains off. Allow the shutters to air dry completely.
