The Best Museums in Sweden



1. THE VASA MUSEUM: The Vasa Museum is a maritime museum in Stockholm which is situated on the island of Djurgarden. The museum exhibits the almost fully intact 17th century warship that has ever been reclaimed, the 64-gun ship Vasa that sank on its first journey in 1628. This is the highest visited museum in Scandinavia.

The Vasa Museum opens seven days a week and has free admission for children and adolescents (up to 18 years).


The opening hours are from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm (1st June to 31st August) and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (1st September to 31st May), whereas, it is opened from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm on Wednesdays during 1st September to 31st May. The opening times for New year's eve are from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm whereas it is closed on 1st January and 23-25th December only. The admission price for Adults is 130 SEK, for students is 100 SEK (with valid student ID) and there is a discounted rate of 100 SEK on Wednesdays.

2. THE SWEDISH HISTORY MUSEUM: The Swedish History Museum is situated in Stockholm that reveals Swedish archaeology and ethnic history from the Mesolithic times. It is considered to be one of the prime museums in Sweden that holds more than 10 million artifacts.

The opening hours are from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm (1st June to 31st August) and 11:00 am to 5:00 pm (1st September to 31st May), whereas, it is opened from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm on Wednesdays during 1st September to 31st May. It is closed on 3rd and 4th April, Mondays during 1st September to 31st May, also closed on 24th, 25th and 31st December.

The admission price for Adults is 100 SEK, for students and senior citizens is 80 SEK and discounted rate of 80 SEK for a group of 15 or more paying visitors and have free admission for children and adolescents (up to 18 years).

3. THE NORDIC MUSEUM: The Nordic Museum is a museum situated next to Djurgarden bridge, Stockholm, and is committed to the tradition, customs and all-inclusive ethnography of Sweden from the Early Modern age until the contemporary period.

The museum is closed on Midsummer's Eve, 24th December, 25th December and 31st December. The opening hours are from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm everyday. The evening timings for Wednesdays are free from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm (September-May only). The admission price for Adults is 100 SEK and have free admission for children and adolescents (up to 18 years).

4. THE NATIONALMUSEUM: It is the national galleria of Sweden, situated on the peninsula Blasieholmen in central Stockholm. The museum was discovered in 1792 as The Royal Museum, the existing building was opened for visitors in 1866, when it was retitled the Nationalmuseum. It is presently closed for renovation till 2017. During this time, the provisional exhibitions can be visited at Konstakademien (The Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts) in Stockholm.

The opening times of the exhibitions are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm except Tuesdays and Thursday when it is 10:00 am to 8:00 pm (w.e.f. October 2, 2014 - January 11, 2015). The admission price for Adults is 100 SEK and have discounted admission price of 80 SEK for students, seniors, and groups of more than 15. It has free admission for people under 21 years of age and "Stockholm Card" holders.

5.FOTOGRAFISKA: May 21, 2010 scripts the inaugural of Fotografiska, the new congregation point for contemporaneous photography. Situated in the Stockholm Harbor, Fotografiska is instituted to accolade Sweden’s public museums with an area devoted entirely to contemporary photography. Fotografiska has 5500 sq m of exhibition bays, cafe, bar, gallery, conference rooms, museum shop, and event spaces. Associates of Fotografiska Family always enjoy free admission.

The opening times of these exhibitions are 9:00 am to 11:00 pm. It is only closed on Midsummer’s Eve and Christmas Eve. The admission price for Adults is 120 SEK and have discounted admission price of 90 SEK for students, seniors, and groups of more than 25 vistors. It has free admission for people under 12 years of age.
