About Guanacaste, Costa Rica

    Geography

    • The province is located at the northernmost part of Costa Rica. Puntarenas and Alajuela provinces border the eastern side of Guanacaste with the country of Nicaragua to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The terrain is mostly flat with the only mountainous areas being the Cordillera de Guanacaste and Cordillera de Tilaran ranges. Guanacaste's capital city, Liberia, is situated in the central part of the province. The city is about 136 miles from Costa Rica's capital, San Jose.

    Weather

    • Guanacaste has a tropical climate which means winter weather is not an issue. Seasons are determined by rainfall. Dry season runs from December to April while rainy season runs from May to November. Temperatures during the year range between highs of 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Recreation

    • Guanacaste and Santa Rosa National Parks are situated side by side in the north. Both offer hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities. Surfing is a popular water sport along the Pacific Ocean beaches, in addition to fishing.
