How to Overcome Lack of Social Contact
- 1). Admit that you have a problem with socializing. Pretending that you enjoy being alone is not going to solve anything.
- 2). Take small steps. Call up a close friend and go out together to eat or for a drink. Even this activity is a step towards being comfortable with socializing. You don't need to go to a large party right away.
- 3). Make an appointment with a psychiatrist or therapist. A mental health professional can give you some tips on how to be more comfortable in social situations. If you have severe anxiety, there may be prescription medications that can help.
- 4). Meet new people. Maybe part of your lack of socializing stems from all of your high school friends leaving town or you moving to a new area for your spouse's job. If you are too shy for the bar scene, try a church group for adults or join a writing club at the local library.
- 5). Change your daily behaviors. If you normally put your head down when someone passes you in the grocery store, attempt to keep your head up and smile instead. Tiny behavior changes can help you to start to feel more comfortable.
