The Oklahoma statutes have laid down police car regulations that define the road rules of law enforcement vehicles. According to Oklahoma legislation, law enforcement officers operate emergency vehicles. These police car regulations direct officers on how they should move on the roads whenever they are on duty. - Title 47, Chapter 11-Motor Vehicles, Rules of the Road, states that in Oklahoma counties with more than 500,000 residents, police cars are exempt from paying parking meters when they are parked on the streets. This law goes for marked and unmarked police cars because they are doing a service for the community, executing official law enforcement business.
- The Oklahoma Statutes, Title 47, Chapter 12-Motor Vehicles, Equipment of Vehicles declares that when a police car is used as an emergency vehicle, it has to be fitted with flashing red, white or blue lights. The lights must "be visible at five hundred (500) feet in normal sunlight." The statute also spells out the combination of lights required on the front, side and rear of unmarked cars used for traffic patrol. All drivers are obligated to respect the warning signals of these lights on law enforcement vehicles and give them the right of way.
- Oklahoma Statutes-Title 47, Chapter 11, Motor Vehicles, Rules of the Road, Right of Way demands that when police vehicles are approaching with the emergency sirens and/or flashing lights on, drivers must yield to them. Other drivers must pull to a corner of the roadway or continue driving parallel to the police car. Police officers who drive still must conduct the vehicle lawfully, remaining aware of other vehicles on the highway.
- The Oklahoma Statute Title 47, Chapter 11, Section 106-Motor Vehicles, Rules of the Road, Authorized Emergency Vehicles empowers police car drivers in time of emergency with a special immunity. When an urgent situation arises or when law offenders are on the loose, police cars are allowed to exceed the speed limit, disregard parking regulations and ignore traffic light laws and other government road signals. This law applies when police vehicles have the emergency indications turned on.
