How to Register a Domain Name at a Locked Rate

    • 1). Navigate to your domain registrar's home page. This is the company that handles your registration and provides technical support. If you do not have a domain registrar, the non-profit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers accredits registrars and provides a list of accredited companies on its website (see Resources).

    • 2). Search for an available domain name using the search function on the registrar's home page. Click "Register" or "Add to Cart" to register an available domain. If the domain you want is not available, you will have to find an alternative. Try a different spelling, combination of words or extension. Most good .com domains are taken, but you might be able to acquire the name as a .net or .org.

    • 3). Select the longest possible registration period during checkout. For most domains, this is 10 years. Registering a domain for the longest duration possible locks in the current rate for the greatest amount of time possible. You can also lock in the current rate on any two-year or longer registration.

    • 4). Provide payment details and complete the checkout process. You will be charged the current registration fee for the entire registration period up front. Many registrars provide discounts for long-term registrations.
