The Psychology of Incarceration

    Purpose

    • "The Psychology of Incarceration" helps prisoners or former prisoners recover from their "prisoner mentality." The program aims to help not only prisoners but also families of prisoners with this transition, according to the Khalil Osiris Project.

    Origins

    • Osiris, the Executive Director of the National Alliance for Radical Prison Reform, spent 15 years in prison himself, organizing lectures and programs for prisoners, according to the Africana Criminal Justice Project at Columbia University.

    Concepts

    • "The Psychology of Incarceration" addresses employment, family relations, social adjustments, drug or alcohol abuse and other challenges prisoners face when they leave prison.

    Certification

    • Students or inmates who have finished the "Psychology of Incarceration" program receive a certification allowing them to serve as mentors to other prisoners or former prisoners.

    Uses

    • The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction uses the video series as a re-entry program for prisoners. Wright State University also offers it as a course.
