Laws Concerning Motorized Recreation Vehicles

    Purpose

    • Due to the increasing popularity of such vehicles, different cities and states have developed a number of laws to ensure the safety of riders and other citizens.

    Laws

    • There are laws governing areas where MRV's are permitted to be used, hours of use in designated areas, prohibited acts and standard minimum requirements for the vehicles to ensure safety. For example, in Bloomington, it is unlawful to use an MRV on private land without permission, it is unlawful to use an MRV while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and there are designated public areas for MRV use between the hours of 8 p.m and 10 p.m..

    Consequences

    • The penalties for breaking the MRV rules in Bloomington include being found guilty of a petty misdemeanor which is punishable with a fine of up to $300 (as of September, 2010). A misdemeanor is punishable with a fine of up to $1,000 or 90 days in jail.
