Lyrica and migraine

A severe chronic pain in the head due to variety of reasons is known as migraine. A number of causes of migraine are known along with the various food items or habits such as smoking which may cause migraine. Further, a number of individuals are affected by it all over the world, the proportion of women affected from it being much larger than men.

Blood is carried into the brain by a number of arteries. If for any reason, the arteries might get tightened, the flow of blood to the brain can be affected, resulting in disruption in the flow of oxygen to brain. The brain would then get in preventive mode and would enlarge the arteries. This is to ensure that necessary level of blood and oxygen is maintained in the brain. However, as a result of this process arteries in the neck and head too get enlarged and as a result, the affected individual develops pain in migraines.

It is also possible that the pain might be caused by various other diseases as well. So, if someone has a problem of severe headache, consultation with an expert needs to be conducted. This is to ensure that necessary treatment can begin.

Further, there are different types of triggers that can cause migraine. It can be triggered by problems of bones and joints or due to prolonged grinding of teeth by the patient. Sometimes, it can get triggered due to some types of allergies as well. It is also possible that the problem might be genetic and can be passed from one generation to the next one. It can be related to the type of employment or nature of the patient as well. This is because those individuals who face a lot of stress at work can develop it.

Further, hormonal problems are known to be a big reason behind migraine in women. It is quite possible that this problem can start at the time of menstruation. Habits such as cigarette smoking too, can trigger migraine in an individual.

Migraine can be classified under various sub categories depending upon the accompanying medical problems. Migraine can occur without an aura, which is the most common form. There is no problem in the vision. However, it can be accompanied by an aura, which means that the patient can have various types of problems regarding the vision. This patient of this form of migraine can have difficulty in speech and vertigo as well. Many times, it is seen that some kind of symptoms such as intense vomiting, nausea and vertigo develop in a child much before the problem of migraine is reported.

Sometimes, migraine related headache lasts very long time which can be unusual. This can be accompanied by seizures. It results from unusual activity of the neurons in the brain which can cause the person to lose awareness for a short period of time or behave in a wild manner, quite difficult to control. In some of the cases, seizures result in numbness of various parts of the body or loss of memory or various types of unwarranted feelings such as confusion, fear or smell.

Reasons of development of seizures: Seizures can set in an individual during various stages of life. New born babies can develop seizures due to various hormonal problems, trauma and CNS infections. CNS infections are known to cause seizures in children, teenaged kids and adults. Adults and teenaged kids can fall prey to seizures due to use of drugs and withdrawal from alcohol abruptly. Older people can develop seizures due to Alzheimer's disease or various tumors.

Lyrica can be quite effective in such forms of migraine, which lead to seizures. This is because Lyrica is known to stabilize the neurons i.e. it is a Neuron Stabilizing Agent.  Various clinical trials have confirmed the effectiveness of Lyrica in treatment of various forms of migraines. However, if use of Lyrica is stopped suddenly, it can lead to various withdrawal symptoms. Some scientists have found that in such cases, various symptoms such as restlessness, insomnia and anxiety may develop.
