Breast Augmentation in India - Procedures and Types of Implants

With 318,000 breast augmentation surgeries performed in USA alone in 2011, Breast Augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in USA as per the ASAPS (American Association of Plastic Surgery) 2011 statistics.

Breast Augmentation enhances the size of the breasts giving an overall body contour and balance to the body.  It also enhances the appearance of the breast that appear to be "empty" that some women have as a result of pregnancy or weight loss or any other structural impairment to the breast tissue. Thus breast augmentation can help regain the self-esteem of a woman and give her a shapely figure.

Types of Breast Implants

Depending on the size, form and feel of the woman's breast, following are the types of implants used for breast augmentation:

Silicone-gel Implants: These implants have a natural consistency when touched and give a natural feel. These implants are cohesive and the shells made of superimposed layers prevent leakage of the content and also do not make liquid sounds during physical activities. They tend to remain whole such that if they were to rupture, the contents would not spill out.

Saline Implants – The saline breast implants are filled with saline solution. The property of the implants is such that it does not allow leakage of the content. The peculiar feature about this implant is that even if the contents are leaked out, it will not produce capsular contracture and the contents are metabolized and eliminated naturally by the body.

There are other implants which are filled with other material such as polypropylene string etc but are less likely used for breast augmentation.

The Procedure

The augmentation begins by making an incision approx. 1.5 inches long in one of the following locations:
  • Infra-mammary incision – The incision is made near the crease under the breasts and thus called infra-mammary.
  • Peri-areolar incision – The incision between areola (the colored circular area on the breast) and the breast skin.
  • Trans-axillary incision – The incision in the armpit.

Depending on the anatomy and type of implant chosen, the breast tissue is lifted and a pocket is created. The implant is then inserted behind the breast and thus adds volume and shape to the breast. The implants are placed in one of the two possible locations:
  • Sub-glandular – The implants if placed directly behind the mammary gland in front of pectoral muscles, is termed as sub-glandular.
  • Sub – muscular – The implant is placed underneath the muscles of the chest wall. The implants if placed here give a more natural look.

Finally, the drainage tubes are inserted and the incision is closed with the sutures.

Outcomes of the Surgery

The outcomes of breast augmentation procedure are instant are very gratifying. The Breast augmentation gives fuller appearance to the breast that better proportions with the body size and shape. The surgery also reduces sagginess and firms the breast tissue.
