- 1). Select a site with full sun and well-drained soil for the sweet chestnut tree. Add 5 to 6 inches of compost to the soil and work it into the soil to a depth of 18 inches with a diameter of 6 feet.
- 2). Dig a hole for the sweet chestnut tree as deep as the root ball and three times as wide.
- 3). Remove the tree from its container and place the sweet chestnut into the hole. Spread the roots out into the hole evenly. Be careful not the break any of the roots.
- 4). Fill the hole with soil and pat the soil down.
- 5). Water the sweet chestnut tree well for 20 minutes after you plant it.
