How to Handle Prison
- 1). Keep to yourself as much as possible and do not talk about the crimes that you have been sentenced for. Do not spread rumors or tell on others, as this can gain you the label "snitch" and could end with you being hurt or killed. Serve your time quietly; don't serve someone else's time by getting involved with their issues or gains.
- 2). Stand up to other prisoners if you are being attacked or threatened. This is a sign of weakness and this will also gain you respect from other inmates watching the conflict if you stand up for yourself, even if you lose the conflict situation. Inmates will only protect you if you show that you are an asset worth protecting. If you can stand up for yourself then others will be willing to stand with you.
- 3). Get along with the prison administration. You are serving time because of a criminal act committed. Show your bad side at first but tone it down and prove to the guards that you are being rehabilitated. This will show the system that they have done their job and succeeded in their mission of rehabilitation. Do not talk to the guards too much, as you will be labeled a "snitch" and could be harmed from other inmates.
- 4). Do not gamble with the other prisoners. Even if you are have a lucky streak, it is not wise to participate in gambling. If you lose to another prisoner and cannot pay them back, the consequences could be very malicious and not worth the risk.
- 5). Start a daily routine by taking the time you have and filling it with projects such as exercising, studying, naps, writing and/or drawing. When you are not going to the commissary, showers or yard, fill your cell time with things to do on a daily basis. When it is consistent you will fall into a regular routine that will help pass the time served in prison.
