- 1). Turn off water when you're not using it. Don't let water run down the drain when you're brushing your teeth or shaving, and don't linger in the shower after you've already washed.
- 2). Fix leaking faucets. On top of the annoying sound they make, they can waste gallons of water a day. Set a dish under a leak to collect water to see how much water you are wasting.
- 3). Only use your toilet to dispose of biological waste. Throw away napkins, floor sweepings and other trash in the trash can instead, since a toilet can use 3 gallons of water in a single flush.
- 4). Fill every load in your dishwasher and clothes washing machine. It's more water-efficient to wash a large load at once than to wash several small loads.
- 5). Water your lawn before 7 a.m. This way, the water doesn't all evaporate because of sunlight, forcing you to have to water again. Also, don't water your lawn while it's raining.
