    The United Way

    • The United Way of the Lakeshore services Muskegon, Oceana and Newaygo counties. Contact the Oceana County office at 231-873-5703, by dialing 211 or 877-722-3134. Like other charitable organizations, the United Way offers assistance with utility bill payments as funding is available for such programs. You must contact your local United Way chapter to see if funding remains available for utility bill assistance.

    Michigan Department of Health and Human Services

    • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services offers assistance with paying utility bills for low-income residents. Contact the Oceana County DHS office at 231-873-7251 or visit the office in person at 4081 W. Polk Road in Hart. DHS offers assistance with utility bills year-round, not just during the winter. You must complete an assistance application and turn it in to your local DHS office before you will receive financial help with your utilities.

    The Salvation Army

    • The Ludington Salvation Army, located at 114 E. Melendy St. in Ludington, services both Mason and Oceana counties. Contact the Ludington Salvation Army at 231-843-3711. Oftentimes, you must submit an assistance application with your local DHS office to receive assistance from the Salvation Army. If DHS does not offer enough assistance to cover the full amount you owe on your utility bills, the Salvation Army may pay the remaining balance.

    Help from Utility Companies

    • Consumers Energy, the largest electric utility company in Michigan, provides electric bill assistance through its PeopleCare program. Contact Consumers Energy to ask about assistance through the PeopleCare program at 800-477-5050. DTE Energy, the largest provider of natural gas services in Michigan, offers a Shut-Off Protection plan that spreads out your average yearly heat costs over one year to make the payments more affordable during the months when heat usage is at its highest. Contact DTE Energy at 800-477-4747. Both utility companies offer assistance to all counties in Michigan, including Oceana County.
