  Installing a television over an electric fireplace, whether situated on a media console or mounted on the wall, is a popular trend in home decor. Electric fireplaces generally do not produce enough heat to cause temperature problems for televisions. Many models allow for operation without actually producing heat. They are meant to supplement central heating sources and are for comfort and aesthetic beauty.

• Media console electric fireplaces are designed specifically to hold televisions and entertainment systems. Media console fireplace units are very functional in that they have a variety of adjustable shelves that also provide space for CDs, DVDs and books. No special wiring is required; these units simply need to be plugged in. They also display a realistic fire scene with or without heat, and without the need for an actual fire. Freestanding Mantel Fireplaces

• Freestanding electric mantel fireplaces offer a flexible, convenient and attractive addition to a room's decor. The are available in different wooden finishes such as oak, cherry, walnut and mahogany. Stone and brick finishes are also available. These electric fireplaces display a realistic fire scene without an actual fire. They are ventless and smokeless. Many models will provide the option of a fire scene without heat. A flat-screen television can be mounted above a freestanding electric mantel fireplace without concern of excessive heat.
  
  

Wall Fireplaces

• Electric wall fireplaces can either be mounted on the wall or recessed in the wall permanently. They are an alternative that saves floor space, while displaying a realistic fire, with or without using the heating element. Models that are wall mounted may radiate heat from the top of the unit. If this is the case, a flat-screen television can safely be mounted below the fireplace unit. If the unit radiates heat at the bottom, a television can safely be mounted above the fireplace. Together, the fireplace and television can create a focal point in a room. Different finishes and colors are available; common choices are black, white and silver.
