Search Engine Optimization: Article Writing 101

Search Engine Optimization: Article Writing

When writing articles about a particular product or service, in my experience I have found that in order for the search engines to understand or get the idea of what you are talking about, you typically need to have a keyword density of between 3 to 5 percent. That means that across the entire web page the keywords you have selected to rank for appear no more than 3 to 5 percent of the time. Let us look at the anatomy of a search engine optimized article.

Firstly lets make sure that we are going to write about something that people actually want to read about and offers some true value to them. Simply putting together a general all-purpose article is of little or no value to your website. In fact it will probably be detrimental to your site in the long run. People are looking to have questions answered and or find out about specific topics, not be fed a general all-purpose article that says nothing. I call that type of article the Political Talk article avoid those type of articles all together.

Secondly, ensure that you choose a heading to your article that accurately describes what it is about, without getting into too much detail. State your title and be done with it. It is a good idea of course to have essential keywords placed in the title of the article. We would refer this as your H1 tag. Various SEO experts debate if you should have multiple H1 tags on a page. Some say as long as it is sectioned off correctly, there is no issue, others, like me insist that a single H1 tag per page is a best practice. Ensure that the keyword integrity of your article is intact in your heading or title.

Thirdly, ensure that within the first sentence that you talk about what your article is about, mentioning your keywords as well. If you were a reader that simply scans articles on the web (most do) you should be able to tell what the article is all about by simply reading the following

1: H1 tag

2: 1st Paragraph

3: H2 Tags

4: H3 Tags

5: Conclusion

By following these three simple steps, you will be well on your way to writing a good article for your website that should get you rankings for your chosen keywords.

There is a lot more to writing good articles for the web, I will be covering these topics on my website http://www.connecticainc.com and future articles in the not too distant future. Topics like active or passive voice writing as well as citation writing, natural link building and what I have termed Article Power the way in which your articles are promoted in such a way that you get the highest credibility rating which in turn translates to more traffic on your website.
