Motorized Bicycle Laws in Alberta
- Alberta defines a motorized bicycle, or moped, as any vehicle or cycle that has either two or three wheels and an engine with a cylinder capacity of less than 50 cc. The Service Alberta department of the Alberta government regulates the laws and licenses required to operate a motorized bicycle in Alberta. These laws include application qualifications and operating regulations.
- To apply for a license to operate a motorized bicycle in Alberta, you must be 18 years old. If you are 16 or 17 years old, are not married or do not support yourself financially, you must have consent from a parent or guardian to apply for a license.
- You must be a legal resident of Alberta to apply for a license. If you are Canadian and have recently moved from a different Canadian province, you must apply for a license within 90 days of moving into Alberta.
- In most cases, you will not be able to apply for a license if you have a medical condition or vision impairment that could affect your ability to operate a motorized bicycle. If you have any questions about whether your condition or impairment may prevent you from applying for a license, you can call the license bureau at 780-427-8230.
- The license that is required for a motorized bicycle is either a Class 6 or Class 7 license. A Class 7 license requires an application, written test and vision screening. A Class 6 license allows you to operate a motorcycle in addition to a motorized bicycle. To get a Class 6 license, you must pass a road test with a motorcycle, in addition to the written test and vision screening.
- All motorized vehicles must be registered with the local driver's bureau in Alberta. The cost of the registration is C$46.
- All operators must wear a helmet. The bicycle must contain a headlight, a red brake light, a red taillight, and red rear reflectors. All reflectors must be visible up to 328 feet at night.
- Operators must ride motorized bicycles on the right shoulder, if one is present. If the road does not have a shoulder, you must drive your motorized bicycle as far to the right side of the road as possible. If you are traveling with another moped operator, you may not ride next to each other, but must ride in a line. While operating a motorized bicycle, you must follow all other relevant road laws, including speed limits and road signs.
